Story of Shikhandi

Shikhandi was born as the daughter of King Drupad. Through the grace of the yakṣa Sthuṇa, she was transformed into a man for the sake of destiny. In a previous life, Shikhandi was Princess Amba of Kashi. Amba performed severe austerities with a single vow—to bring about the death of Bhishm. Bhishm was bound by a vow - that he would never raise weapons against one who was born a woman or had once been a woman. Knowing this secret, the Pandavs placed Shikhandi before Arjun in battle against Bhisham. On the tenth day of the war, Bhisham—unconquered in countless battles—fell, fulfilling Amba’s ancient resolve.
